646f9e108c A man enters a roadside diner run by a young woman and claims he is being chased by murderers. Beth, a young woman who owns a restaurant close by an abandoned highway, shelters Barry, a young man who arrives at her door hungry and wounded. Soon, a group of men appears. Barry claims that they are after him. The handsome leader of the group tells Beth a different story… The only reason I rented this was because I saw that Radha Mitchell was in it, and I loved her in "High Art." This movie is great! It is suspenseful and very well made, I don't understand why it never became a cult hit. It seems like an Australian film and strangely enough, it has a kind of "Mad Max" feel to it, where it's totally low budget but looks great. The script is great, the acting is great, just rent it, you will love it. But don't try to find out what it's about in advance - it's better to just go in with no idea. WHEN STRANGERS APPEAR, a low budget Kiwi thriller set around a remote diner, has the potential to be a minor classic of the genre. It has a tight, focused script and lots of suspense scenes that work well given the constraints of the budget. A shame, then, that Scott Reynolds is a better writer than he is director, because it's the indifferent direction that really lets this down.

The first half hour of the film is the best. We're introduced to the tough, focused heroine (an easy job for Radha Mitchell), her life, and the mysterious strangers who come into it. We don't know much and things work better that way. As the story goes on, though, it seems to become less focused and just involves people chasing other people around, and I felt less and less invested in the story. Sure, there are some good twists here, but by the time of the unbelievable climax I was eager for the story to end. The plot is too simplistic and the running time seems padded out.

It's not all bad, and in places this is much better than your average Hollywood thriller, but it could have been so much more had greater effort been made in terms of staging and originality. More set-pieces and less waffle would have been better, I think. Still, there's quite a lot to commend here, not least some assured performances from Josh Lucas and Barry Watson.
This is one of the best thriller movies you can ever watch so I felt that this is a good opportunity to see the movie so those who are interested in watching the mysterious movies to try this out as you will love it solar panel installers near me los angeles
